Nomination Package Available - July 27, 2018

Those interested in running as a candidate in the 2018 General Local Election will be able to pick up nomination packages for Mayor, Councillor and Elector Organizations starting Friday, July 27, 2018.

Electors in Highlands vote to choose:


  • 1 Mayor 
  • 6 Councillors

School Trustees - School District 62 - Sooke

  • 4 Trustees for the Belmont zone

School Trustees -  School District 61 - Greater Victoria

  • 9 Trustees

Summary of qualifications for the office of Mayor and Councillor. 

You must:

  • be 18 years of age or older on general voting day (October 20, 2018);
  • be a Canadian citizen;
  • have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately prior to filing nomination documents (prior to March 14, 2018);
  • not be disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

Prospective candidates must be nominated by at least two eligible electors from the  District of Highlands.  Further information regarding the election of School Trustee (School District No. 61 & 62) is available from the Ministry of Education.

Nomination Packages for Mayor and Councillor will be available for pick up until 4:00 pm on September 14, 2018, from the District Office located at 1980 Millstream Road.

Those picking up packages will be required to provide their names however, their names will not be publicly released. The nomination package contains all the information an interested person needs to know in order to become a candidate to run in the election, including rules regarding election signage, required number of nominators, and other applicable resource material. There is no fee to pick up a nomination package

Deadline to submit nomination documents to the Chief Election Officer at the District Office is 4:00pm, Friday, September 14, 2018.

ALL Candidates Meeting  (for offices of Mayor and Councillor)

The Highlands District Community Association along with the West Shore Chamber of Commerce will be hosting two All Candidates Meeting.  The first one will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at 7:30 pm, at the East Fire Hall, the second one will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, at 7.30 pm at the Highlands Community Hall. 

Candidate Resources 

Individuals considering running in local elections now have access to resources (educational videos, brochures, etc.) that provide information about the general expectations and the roles and responsibilities of elected officials.  These new resources will help people to make informed decisions about running for government office.
